Christopher John Sansom, C J Sansom, född 1952, tog sin doktorsexamen i historia vid Birminghams universitet och arbetade senare som jurist innan han blev författare på heltid. Han hade redan publicerat en rad historiska prisbelönade spänningsromaner när Vinter i Madrid kom ut 2006.
